KLANG — A man in his 20s has been remanded for four days from today for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and causing the death of a motorcyclist on Jalan Raya Barat here yesterday.
Magistrate Siti Zubaidah Mahat issued police the remand order, the order to remand the man to facilitate investigations under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The accident occurred at about 11.40 am yesterday in which the victim, a man in his 30s, was flung into the air upon impact, and fell onto the roof of another car after the suspect overtook at high speed.
The victim died on the spot, according to South Klang Police chief ACP Lim Jit Huey.
The suspect was driving a Honda City towards Klang town in a dangerous manner and had overtaken several vehicles before entering the opposite lane and colliding with the victim’s motorcycle, Lim was reported saying by Bernama.
“The impact caused the victim to be flung onto a (blue) Perodua Myvi car. The suspect tested positive for alcohol and drugs,” he added.
The offence carries a maximum 15 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM100,000 and disqualification from driving for at least 10 years.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, prompting outraged reactions.
Members of Parliament also reacted, with Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal calling for the death penalty, which exists in Malaysia for certain offences, but is no longer mandatory.
He said the opposition bloc supports the death penalty for drink drivers who cause fatal accidents, as existing laws have failed to serve as a deterrent.
“Such tragedies are repeated, proving that current laws are not adequate in addressing drink driving.
“When a person under the influence of alcohol still chooses to drive, the law properly assumes that he has an intention to kill, as his actions are at high risk of taking another person’s life,” Wan Fayhsal said on Facebook.
Selangor Exco Papparaidu Veraman also called for stiffer penalties, noting that such accidents happened too often despite existing laws.
“If needed, the law should be amendment for harsher penalties such as caning and for the maximum jail time to be served.
“This is no longer an isolated case because far too many tragedies like this have occurred. It is time that a stricter approach is implemented through stricter and heavier enforcement to serve as a lesson to the society,” said Papparaidu, the state exco for human resources and poverty alleviation.
Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin meanwhile suggested a lifetime driving ban for all drink driving offenders.
The current 10-year suspension from driving is insufficient, the PAS leader said, urging the government to take tougher action while tagging Transport Ministry Anthony Loke in his statement on Facebook.
Khairil Nizam said the government should view drink driving as a public safety issue rather than a mere traffic offence. – March 30, 2026
