Khairy rejoins Umno unconditionally, vows to help rebuild party

Former youth chief among thousands readmitted as leadership moves to restore unity and public confidence

KUALA LUMPUR – Khairy Jamaluddin has confirmed his return to Umno is not attached to any conditions, saying his focus is now on helping revive and strengthen the party.

The former Rembau MP said he is ready to work with leaders at all levels, as well as grassroots members, to restore public trust in the party.

“I hope this decision marks a new beginning for us to move forward in a more united, mature and credible manner,” the former Health minister said in a Facebook post today.

His return follows a decision by Umno’s Supreme Council last night to readmit more than 6,000 members, including several former senior leaders such as ex-vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and former foreign minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar.

Khairy had been expelled from the party in 2023, while other leaders, including Hishammuddin, were suspended for six years.

Last month, Khairy had expressed his intention to return after party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that Umno would reopen its doors to former members who had been expelled or suspended.

Khairy conveyed his appreciation to Zahid for accepting his application, as well as to the members of the Supreme Council for their decision.

“I accept this decision with humility and gratitude, fully aware of the responsibility that comes with it.

“My time outside the party has given me space for reflection and self-improvement,” he said. – April 18, 2026
