KUALA LUMPUR – A 41-year-old man has been fined RM30,000 by the Keningau Sessions Court after pleading guilty to posting content considered extremely offensive and insulting to the judiciary on Facebook on December 22, 2025.
Mohamad Azri Sahlam was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) for knowingly using an application service—specifically his Facebook account—to create and transmit communications of an extremely offensive nature.
He has since paid the fine. The sentence falls under Section 233(2) of Act 588, which allows for a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) emphasised the seriousness of spreading content with 3R elements (race, religion, royalty).
“Such behaviour not only undermines the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, but also has the potential to disturb public peace and social harmony,” MCMC said in a statement.
“The public is reminded to use social media wisely and responsibly to ensure the online space remains safe and free from misuse that could cause anxiety and societal tension. Strict action will be taken against those involved,” the commission added.
Members of the public are urged to use social media responsibly to maintain a safe digital environment and prevent misuse that could incite fear or societal tension. MCMC warned that strict action will be taken against offenders. – April 28, 2026
