KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has intensified its Internet Safety Campaign across all community levels following a steep increase in online fraud cases, which caused losses totalling RM2.77 billion last year.

Deputy Communications Ministry Teo Nie Ching noted that this figure marks a worrying rise compared with RM1.28 billion in 2023 and RM1.57 billion in 2024, with fraudulent investment schemes accounting for the largest share of losses, Bernama reported.

“Initially, victims see returns in their accounts. For example, if they invest RM1,000 and it becomes RM3,000, they are encouraged to add more funds until their savings are depleted,” she said after attending the Community Outreach Programme with e-commerce platform Shopee at Felda Bukit Permai in Kulai today.

Commenting on the Internet Safety Campaign, Teo, who is also the Kulai MP, explained that the ministry adopts different approaches tailored to target groups to ensure effective digital awareness messaging.

Cyberbullying is addressed at the primary school level, while scams are the focus in community areas such as Felda settlements, villages, and residential neighbourhoods.

Meanwhile, secondary school and higher education students are educated on the dangers of employment scams and mule account risks.

As of April 30, the campaign has reached 10,134 schools, including national schools, vernacular schools, national secondary schools, teacher training institutes, and higher education institutions, involving nearly 900,000 participants.

During the programme, 200 Felda Bukit Permai residents received daily essential item kits through a strategic collaboration with Shopee.

The event also featured health screening counters and Internet Safety Campaign activities led by officers from the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI). — May 16, 2026
