KUALA LUMPUR – Transport Minister Anthony Loke has ordered the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to hit Prasarana Malaysia Bhd with the maximum possible penalty following a train derailment that crippled services on the Ampang-Sri Petaling LRT line today.
Pulling no punches, Loke slammed the rail operator’s leadership, warning that top management will not be spared from accountability.
“I want to emphasise that Prasarana’s board of directors and management team cannot continue with their ‘business as usual’ attitude,” Loke said in a scathing statement today.
“Incidents like these must be taken seriously, and no one in Prasarana’s top management will be exempt from being held accountable.”
Morning rush hour chaos
The minister’s stern directive follows a chaotic morning rush hour for Klang Valley commuters. The incident unfolded when an Ampang-Sri Petaling line train derailed near the switch track area at the Chan Sow Lin LRT station, causing immediate and widespread service disruptions.
Videos circulating rapidly across social media showed stranded passengers being evacuated from the immobile train and forced to walk along the tracks to safety.
Rapid KL later confirmed the derailment, noting that the train became completely stuck after passing through the switch track. A total of 25 passengers were onboard at the time.
Heads must roll
While all 25 passengers and rail personnel were evacuated safely with no injuries reported, Loke stressed that the ministry refuses to compromise on public safety given the high-risk nature of the track failure.
Demanding swift consequences, the minister stated that Apad has already launched a formal probe. He called on Prasarana’s board to take drastic internal measures, including sacking those responsible for the lapse.
Cabinet oversight and public transparency
To ensure a completely transparent investigation, the Transport Ministry has established a special task force to dissect the root cause of the derailment.
Loke has directed the task force to expedite its findings so they can be channeled directly to the Cabinet as soon as possible and immediately released to the public.
“Safety standards and public trust in the transport system cannot be compromised,” Loke reiterated.
“Serious action must be taken to restore confidence in rail services under Prasarana’s management.” – May 28, 2026
