MELAKA — Perikatan Nasional (PN) has confirmed that it will contest all 28 state legislative assembly seats in the Melaka election, likely to be held this year.

PN Deputy President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said opposition parties under the loose alliance Ikatan Prihatin Rakyat (IPR) can contest seats under the PN banner.

“No issue about contesting under our banner. We can work together, with negotiations on seat distribution.

“With their (IPR parties) presence together with PN and Bersatu, we can strategise for success in the election,” Muhyiddin said when officiating Bersatu’s election machinery in Klebang, here, last night.

Bersatu is already preparing for the polls and the party’s division chiefs have been asked to submit names of potential candidates.

“We want those with a good personality and work ethic, who have experience and are close to the people,” Muhyiddin said.

IPR, which was formed in August last year, comprises 11 opposition parties, including those in PN, namely, PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP).

Other members of the informal alliance include Musa, Berjasa, Pejuang and Urimai.

Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh has indicated that state polls will be held this year, ahead of the legislative assembly’s expiry in December.

Barisan Nasional has already said it would contest all state seats on its own, without collaboration with Pakatan Harapan. – May 31, 2026
