KUALA LUMPUR — As Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim sat down for breakfast with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this morning, one can only speculate their conversation.
But one thing for certain, to observers, the roti canai that both the Sultan of Johor and Prime Minister were having — at the Bunglo 289 restaurant in Jalan Raja Chulan here — was served with a side of speculation that the Johor state elections will be called anytime soon.
The dissolution of the State Assembly expected next month.
A one-day sitting scheduled for June 22 has been called with observers and politicians expecting the dissolution to follow, paving the way for polls in August.
The sitting is said to be “unusual” according to Johor Jaya MP Liow Cai Tung.
In a Facebook post on May 29, the DAP representative said the notification from the Johor State Legislative Assembly secretary specifically says that there will be no questions and answer session.
There are 56 seats up for contest. Barisan Nasional which holds a two-thirds majority with 40 seats is set to go it alone this time.
The state polls have until April next year to be held which raises the question as to the urgency for the need to dissolve the state assembly.
Earlier today, first term Skudai assemblywoman Marina Ibrahim who won her seat in 2022 with an overwhelming 13,000 majority announced she will not be defending her seat.
Marina, 38, regarded as among DAP’s young stars and future leaders, did not give clear reasons for retiring from politics but said she will continue public service in a different capacity. – May 31, 2026
