KUALA LUMPUR – Melaka DAP is expected to announce its withdrawal from the Melaka unity government at a press conference this afternoon, following the state assembly’s decision on proposed amendments to the Melaka Constitution to allow the appointment of assembly members.
The press conference, scheduled for about 2pm after the tabling and decision on the constitutional amendment bill at the Melaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN), will be led by Melaka DAP chairman and Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, alongside Melaka Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Adly Zahari, according to local media reports.
The party is expected to announce the resignation of all its representatives holding positions in the state administration as a protest against the constitutional amendment, which would pave the way for the appointment of appointed state assembly members.
Among those expected to step down are state executive councillor (exco) Allex Seah Shoo Chin, who oversees Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs, as well as two deputy excos, Low Chee Leong and Leng Chau Yen. Melaka deputy speaker Kerk Chee Yee is also expected to resign.
The move would effectively end DAP’s participation in the Melaka unity government, which is led by Barisan Nasional (BN) in partnership with PH.
The decision follows a prolonged dispute between DAP and the state government over the proposed constitutional amendment involving appointed assembly members.
DAP’s withdrawal is also expected to include the resignation of all party-appointed representatives serving under the state administration, including local council members and village heads.
According to Malaysiakini, DAP representatives will make the announcement at the Melaka state assembly after the state government proceeds with the constitutional amendment, which is expected to be passed today.
Sources told the news portal that Melaka DAP chairman Khoo had briefed the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) on the decision last night, with the move receiving the committee’s backing.
The mass resignations mark a significant escalation in DAP’s opposition to the state government’s plan to amend the Melaka Constitution to allow up to seven appointed state assembly members.
The proposed amendment has triggered tensions between DAP and BN, particularly with MCA, a component party of the coalition.
On July 11, Seah said in a Facebook post that Melaka DAP opposed the introduction of appointed assembly members.
He pledged to resign immediately as a state executive councillor if the constitutional amendment was approved by the state assembly on July 14 with a two-thirds majority from BN.
Seah also challenged MCA and its Melaka chairman Lim Ban Hong to state whether the party would stand with the people of Melaka in opposing the proposal or continue supporting the constitutional amendment.
Earlier, Lim questioned whether Seah had raised DAP’s objections to the proposal during state executive council meetings. – July 14, 2026
