KUALA LUMPUR – Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek has ordered a thorough review of student attendance records during additional classes, as well as security controls and patrols at the school, following the tragic death of a student in Yong Peng, Johor.

Fadhlina said the Ministry of Education (KPM) would examine all matters under its purview and stressed that nothing would be concealed.

“This includes student attendance records during additional classes as well as aspects of security control and patrols at the school. The security company has also been asked to cooperate in the review,” she said in a Facebook post today.

She noted that she had been briefed by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Johor Education Department (JPN), Batu Pahat District Education Office (PPD), and the school management on the chronology of the incident and ongoing actions.

Fadhlina also visited the victim’s family at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat to extend her sympathies.

“If there is negligence or responsibilities that were not carried out as they should have been, firm action will be taken,” she added.

According to PDRM, the victim was found unconscious in the school compound before being pronounced dead. A 16-year-old boy has since been arrested and remanded for six days to assist in investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Fadhlina stated that the motive and exact cause of the incident remain under police investigation, emphasizing that KPM will extend full cooperation to PDRM without pre-empting their findings.

Counselling support is also being deployed for students and school staff affected by the tragedy.

“Don’t hide anything,” Fadhlina said, adding that the grieving family deserves answers while urging the public to grant them space and refrain from unhelpful speculation.

“We want the truth to be established based on facts and not speculation,” she stressed.

Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the death of the student.

The incident has shocked the nation and reignited acute concerns over safety in schools, coming just a week after another student died on school grounds.

On Sept 25, a Form Two male student was found unconscious at a boarding school dormitory in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, before being pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. – October 4, 2026
