KUALA LUMPUR – The refurbishment of trains operating on the MRT Kajang Line will continue despite delays in the delivery of several replacement parts, MRT Corp said.
MRT Corp said it is currently undertaking a train reconditioning programme involving the replacement of hundreds of components on the Kajang Line train sets.
So far, seven train sets have been delivered to SMH Rail Sdn Bhd for reconditioning, while the remaining 51 train sets remain under the operational purview of Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd.
“Additional trains will only be released to SMH Rail for reconditioning as completed train sets are returned,” MRT Corp said in a statement today.
The company said hundreds of replacement parts had already been delivered to its warehouse, with partial payments made for the parts received.
However, 22 parts are expected to arrive only in 2027 due to production lead times.
MRT Corp also said three parts were becoming obsolete, with the existing models to continue being used temporarily.
“The existing models of these parts will continue to be used in the interim, while the new replacement models are expected to arrive from 2028,” it said.
As a result, the reconditioning programme will proceed using the replacement parts currently available.
“The remaining 25 parts will be progressively retrofitted onto the trains as they become available,” MRT Corp said.
SMH Rail is expected to return four reconditioned train sets to Rapid Rail for operations in December 2026.
MRT Corp said the phased approach would allow the reconditioning programme to continue while the remaining replacement parts are delivered over the coming years.
Earlier, Scoop reported that the overhaul programme had fallen significantly behind schedule, with seven train sets still awaiting completion more than two years after being sent to SMH Rail, according to a source.
The nearly RM600 million contract was awarded to SMH Rail in July 2024 to carry out maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) works on all 58 train sets operating on the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line.
According to information gathered by Scoop, payments under the contract are being made progressively based on the completion of agreed milestones. – October 6, 2026
