KUALA LUMPUR – The Paralympic Council Malaysia (PCM) announced the establishment of its Athletes’ Council in compliance with International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) policies last Tuesday.

PCM president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin said para swimmer Carmen Lim will lead the council as it requires athletes’ representation at governing board decision-making levels to drive the Paralympic Movement.

Other members of the council are paralympic sprinter Mohamad Ridzuan Puzi, paralympic swimmer Jamery Siga, para swimmer Fraidden Dawan and boccia athlete Noor Askuzaimey Mat Salim.

“This council also serves to meet legislative requirements of the Sports Development Act 2018, where PCM is now included in this act and entrusted with the responsibility to regulate para sports development in the country.

“All these five paralympic athletes shall take office from December 12, 2023, until December 31, 2024. After this term, appointment to this office shall be via elections by para athletes,” he said in a statement today.

The mission of this council is to be the voice of all current, future, and retired para athletes within the Paralympic Movement, along with the strategic direction of PCM, and to support Malaysian para athletes both on and off the field of play.

“Their strategy will serve as a guideline to all Paralympic Movement stakeholders in creating an effective athlete voice that represents the needs of para athletes,” he said. – December 20, 2023
