KUALA LUMPUR – Third time’s the charm for independent mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai who upset their compatriots Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei to win the Swiss Open at the St Jakobshalle arena late last night.

This is their third consecutive appearance in the Swiss Open final.

In 2022, they lost to Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Lohau of Germany and last year they were bested by Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin.

This time, on their third try, tournament eighth seeds Soon Huat-Shevon took only 37 minutes to dispatch the world number nine pair 21-16, 21-13.

This is the world number 14 pair’s first title in seven years as they last won the Singapore Open in 2018, defeating former world number ones Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir in straight sets.

This is also their third title as a pair after winning the German Open the same year.

For Tang Jie-Ee Wei, this is their second time losing a final this season after stumbling at the Thailand Masters to Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai in straight sets last month. – March 25, 2024
