KUALA LUMPUR — Jake Paul, the 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer, pulled off a stunning victory over boxing legend Mike Tyson late Friday night, winning via unanimous decision in one of the most unlikely bouts in boxing history.

Fighting before 72,300 fans at AT&T Stadium in Texas, Paul dominated the 58-year-old Tyson throughout the fight, with judges scoring it 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73 in his favour.

The victory improved Paul’s professional record to 11-1 while Tyson, a former heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer, fell to 50-7.

“He’s exactly what I thought, one of the greatest to ever do it,” Paul said post-fight, paying homage to Tyson. “It’s such an honour to share the ring with him. This man is an icon.”

Tyson, known for his ferocity and knockout power during his prime, started the fight with aggression, particularly in the early rounds. However, as the match progressed, his 31-year age disadvantage and 19 years away from professional competition became apparent.

By the mid-rounds, Tyson’s pace slowed significantly, allowing Paul to dominate with precise jabs and well-timed combinations while taking little damage in return.

Although Tyson occasionally showed bursts of energy, they weren’t enough to overcome the younger and more agile Paul.

When asked if he was done with boxing, Tyson remained noncommittal. “I don’t think so,” he said, teasing the possibility of facing Paul’s brother, Logan Paul.

Despite the loss, Tyson maintained pride in his performance. “I didn’t prove anything to anybody but myself. I’m just happy with what I can do,” he said.

Confident after the win, Paul expressed his ambition for future fights. “Anyone I want,” he declared. “Everyone is next on the list.”

The bout highlighted the stark contrast between Tyson’s storied past and Paul’s rise as a social media star-turned-professional boxer.

For Tyson, it marked a tough return to the ring against a much younger opponent, while for Paul, it was a defining moment in his career, showcasing his ability to headline a major event and secure victory against one of boxing’s greatest icons. — November 16, 2024
