KUALA LUMPUR — Harimau Malaya’s naturalised striker Sergio Aguero has hailed his selection for the Asean All-Stars as a major milestone in his career, ahead of Wednesday’s highly anticipated Maybank Challenge Cup clash against Manchester United at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
The 31-year-old Sri Pahang FC forward said representing Malaysia on such a prominent platform—even in an exhibition fixture—was a moment of immense pride.
“It’s an incredible honour to be selected for such a historic match. Playing against one of the biggest clubs in the world, alongside some of the best players from this region, is truly a dream come true.
“What makes it even more special is the chance to represent Malaysia on this stage. Carrying the flag in front of our home fans means everything to me,” said the Argentine-born footballer in a statement.
Aguero is among five Malaysian players named in the regional squad. Joining him are Terengganu FC defender Azam Azmi Murad, Penang FC winger Adib Abdul Ra’op, Perak FC goalkeeper Haziq Nazdli, and Kuala Lumpur City FC defender Declan Lambert.
The Red Devils last played in Malaysia during their 2009 pre-season tour, recording back-to-back wins over Malaysia XI—3-2 and 2-0—on July 18 and 20 at the same venue.
Manchester United’s trip to Kuala Lumpur is part of a broader pre-season tour, with the 13-time EPL champions also set to face the Hong Kong national team on May 30.
