KUALA LUMPUR — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed that the contract situation involving Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah will be resolved before they compete in the Japan Open next month.
The Japan Open is scheduled from July 15 to July 20.
Today, during a press conference at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) following a town hall meeting with the players, BAM president Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said that there are still some unresolved issues concerning the athletes’ contracts but assured that they are dedicated to addressing these issues before the Japan Open.
“Today’s discussion was constructive, and our goal is to support all athletes.
“I would like to reiterate BAM’s intention to include both athletes in upcoming plans, assuring fans that they remain integral to the team’s future.
“We anticipate making an announcement that will provide a mutually beneficial situation for Pearly and Thinaah before the tournament, enabling them to focus entirely on their performance.
“There are a couple of remaining issues, but I am confident they can be sorted out.
“We have established a firm timeline to ensure both athletes can concentrate on performing at their best in the upcoming events. We can’t afford any more delays,” said Tengku Zafrul.
Tengku Zafrul said that it’s common for athletes to seek better benefits when negotiating contracts with BAM.
He emphasised the importance of fairness, noting that their contributions should be valued appropriately, and highlighted BAM’s commitment to a performance-based pay structure.
Tengku Zafrul said that BAM already offers various forms of support beyond tournament earnings but acknowledges the need for security and recognition of the athletes’ contributions.
Additionally, Tengku Zafrul indicated BAM’s willingness to customise support packages to better align with the athletes’ value and performance.
The town hall meeting also allowed Pearly and Thinaah to discuss logistical challenges and provide constructive feedback, especially regarding the development of junior talent.
BAM is dedicated to supporting grassroots initiatives and nurturing new talent in the sport. – June 30, 2025
