KUALA LUMPUR – National para cyclist Nuraini Muhamad Shukri has won Malaysia’s first women’s medal at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, claiming bronze in the C1 time trial in Belgium.
The 30-year-old clocked 26 minutes 07.99 seconds over the 11.6-kilometre course in Ronse yesterday, finishing behind Australia’s Tahlia Clayton-Goodie, who took gold in 19:34.82, and Brazil’s Victoria Maria de Camargo Barbosa, who secured silver in 24:42.97.
The C1 category is for riders with severe impairments who are still able to compete on a standard bike.
National coach Sallehudin Mohd Noh said the achievement marked a new milestone for Malaysian cycling.
“This is the first time that a Malaysian para-cyclist has won a medal in women’s road cycling at the World Championships,” he said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.
“Though Nuraini competed at the Asian Championships in Thailand earlier this year, she had never raced at the world meet before. We just asked her to remain focused on her own performance.”
Nuraini had previously won two gold medals – in the C1 road race and time trial – at the Asian Championships in February.
Team manager Fuzaimi Shamsudin described her latest success as a boost for the national programme.
It is the second time a Malaysian para cyclist has won a medal in international road competition, following Yusof Hafizi’s bronze in the men’s C1 time trial at the UCI World Cup in Adelaide last year.
The bronze medal comes ahead of Malaysia’s 68th National Day celebration tomorrow, which Nuraini’s team hailed as a timely gift for the country. — August 30, 2025
