KUALA LUMPUR – The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has ordered national coaching directors Kenneth Jonassen (singles) and Rexy Mainaky (doubles) to carry out an immediate post-mortem following the men’s team’s defeat to Indonesia in the 2025 SEA Games final.
Malaysia were beaten 3-0 by their long-time rivals at Gymnasium 4, Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus yesterday, ending a two-decade wait since their last men’s team gold at the 2005 SEA Games in the Philippines.
BAM secretary-general Kenny Goh said a thorough investigation is necessary ahead of the team’s participation in the 2026 Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) in Qingdao, China, from February 3 to 8.
“Firstly, this is a disappointing result, and we must take drastic action.
“Both coaching directors need to review and conduct a post-mortem to understand what went wrong and ensure it does not happen again, especially as we prepare for BATC 2026,” Kenny told Scoop when contacted today.
Despite the setback, Kenny remains hopeful that the shuttlers can refocus on the individual events, which begin today and continue until Sunday.
Malaysia had set a target of four gold medals in badminton at the biennial Games, which run from December 9 to 20 in Bangkok and Chonburi. – December 11, 2025
