Banned Rodrigo Holgado eyes JDT move if FIFA suspension is overturned

KUALA LUMPUR – The career of FIFA-banned Malaysian international Rodrigo Holgado could take a major turn if the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturns his suspension, with the striker reportedly being linked to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

South American football journalist Maestro Pichanguero revealed on social media that Holgado and his representatives are optimistic about a favourable CAS ruling following an appeal by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

According to the Chilean journalist, those close to Holgado believe the administrative error was the responsibility of FAM.

Holgado, 30, has also expressed his intention to continue playing professionally, dismissing
speculation that he is considering retirement.

Reports indicate that his contract with Colombian club América de Cali, which runs until the end of 2026, would be terminated should FIFA lift the suspension. In that scenario, he is expected to join JDT on a long-term deal.

“I have confirmation from a source close to Holgado that FAM has taken the matter to CAS and that next week they could lift the 12-month ban imposed by FIFA in September 2025,” Pichanguero wrote on Facebook.

Holgado made his debut for the Harimau Malaya last year and was one of seven heritage players sanctioned by FIFA over alleged document falsification.

He, alongside Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel, was fined 2,000 Swiss francs (RM10,000) and handed a 12-month suspension. – January 20, 2026
