KUALA LUMPUR — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has officially appointed Harry Hartono as the national men’s singles coach, completing a significant move in the restructuring of its coaching framework.

In addition to Hartono’s appointment, BAM has named Yeoh Kay Bin as the junior men’s singles coach and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif as the women’s doubles coach. These changes are part of a broader strategy to enhance performance and ensure sustained development of players at every level.

Scoop previously reported that Hartono was a highly likely candidate for a role within BAM’s singles development programme, with the official confirmation now marking the finalisation of the decision.

BAM’s performance committee chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Lee Chong Wei, explained that these decisions were made after consultations with singles director Kenneth Jonassen, who proposed several candidates focused on long-term player development.

“We had discussions with the singles director, and he submitted a list of coaching candidates, emphasising continuity for younger players,” Chong Wei stated in BAM’s media release.

Under the restructured setup, Hartono and Kay Bin will work alongside head coach Datuk Tey Seu Bock to guide the national men’s singles team, with support from K. Yogendran, Alvin Chew, and Goh Giap Chin.

Chong Wei highlighted that the combined expertise of the new coaching trio would bring added depth to the national training programme, with a focus on developing players who can consistently compete at the international level.

He further noted that Zakry’s appointment was proposed by doubles director Rexy Mainaky as part of efforts to strengthen the women’s doubles sector.

“I also met with Rexy, who personally recommended Zakry as one of the candidates,” he explained.

Zakry will join the women’s doubles coaching team led by head coach Rosman Razak, alongside Ching Kai Feng and Amelia Anscelly.

The three newly appointed coaches will commence their roles in February, with Kay Bin starting on February 3, Hartono on February 10, and Zakry on February 20. – January 30, 2026
