Wait for World Tour title ends for Aaron-Wooi Yik

Malaysians win Denmark Open to break their title duck

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik finally broke their World Tour title duck by winning the Denmark Open today.

The Malaysians were in imperious form, taking out Indonesian world number 14 pair Muhammad Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana 21-13, 21-17 at the Jyske Bank Arena in Odense in 32 minutes.

By securing the Superseries 750 title, the world number four pair have ended their quest for a tour title despite winning Malaysia’s first World Championships title last year.

The Malaysians also have an Olympic bronze medal, a Commonwealth Games gold, and an Asian Games bronze, which they won recently in Hangzhou.

But a World Tour title had always eluded them despite getting into multiple finals. This year alone they got to the final of the China and India Opens but fell at the final hurdle.

This win proves they can win a World Tour title and they will be looking to add another on Tuesday at the French Open.

“We waited for this for so long, I will always remember this moment,” said Wooi Yik.

Meanwhile, Aaron added he is looking forward to celebrating the win before heading to France.

“Yeah, we will take some time to celebrate this win and we will head to the French Open.

“Of course, we are enjoying the time here and this is our first World Tour title. We hope there’s more coming,” said Aaron during the post-match interview. – October 22, 2023
