KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu says there are “many fortune tellers” now predicting the party’s direction.
He also denied a recent allegation made by Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, who claimed the existence of two factions within the party.
In assuring that this matter will not be discussed at tonight’s Bersatu supreme council meeting, he said that there would be no changes to the current position of its leaders.
“I don’t think there will be any change today. There are many ‘fortune tellers’ now,” he said.
Speaking to Scoop, Faizal also questioned Syed Abu Hussin’s statement allegedly aimed at deliberately creating a sensation as the Bukit Gantang MP had never attended any of Bersatu’s important meetings.
“Bukit Gantang has pledged to support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (as prime minister), deviating from the party’s stance.
“He has also never attended any of the party’s important meetings. So how does he claim to know that there are two camps in the party?” he asked.
His response followed Syed Abu Hussin’s recent statement claiming that a majority of Bersatu MPs were in favour of party secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin helming the party presidency.
According to him, Bersatu is currently divided into two factions: one supporting the leadership of the president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and the other endorsing Hamzah.
In the aftermath of these intense remarks, speculation arose suggesting that Hamzah might be dismissed as Bersatu’s secretary-general, with the possibility of Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali taking over the position.
However, Faizal insisted that there had not been any change of position in the leadership of the party as of now.
He said the power to appoint or change any leader in Bersatu lies in the hands of the party president.
“Appointments and the switching of posts in the party fall within the president’s prerogative. We all trust the president to make the necessary decisions.
So far, six Bersatu MPs have declared their support for Anwar, including Syed Abu Hussin, Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and most recently, Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tg Karang). – January 28, 2024
