Don’t even think about banning 24-hour eateries, says Kepong MP

Lawmaker says ban could negatively affect food and beverage industry, tourism sector

KUALA LUMPUR – Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad should not even consider the suggestion to ban 24-hour eateries as it will impact economic and tourism opportunities, said Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng.

Lim said the ban will adversely affect jobs and revenue generated by the food and beverage industry, as well as ruining Malaysia’s reputation as a food haven.

“Prohibiting them would lead to job losses and a decrease in economic activity.

“These eateries offer convenience and accessibility to late-shift workers, travellers arriving at unconventional hours, and those with non-traditional lifestyles.

“Late-night eateries are social venues where friends and family members can gather after work or during weekends to enjoy meals and bond,” the DAP lawmaker said in a statement.

On Monday, Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) president Datuk Mohideen Abdul Kader had urged the government to ban 24-hour eateries, citing obesity that could be caused by consuming late-night meals.

In response, Dzulkefly said the suggestion could be refined, acknowledging that the ban could serve as a measure to combat obesity in Malaysia.

He added that workers with unconventional schedules who depend on such eateries should be taken into consideration. – April 24, 2024
