Nenggiri assemblyman not surprised by decision, ready to fight in court

KUALA LUMPUR – Embattled Nenggiri assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim will be seeking an injunction against the Kelantan assembly for stripping him of his seat.

Azizi, who was recently sacked from Bersatu, told Scoop he was not surprised by the Kelantan speaker’s decision and he is ready to fight in court to keep his seat.

“I understand that the state government is different from the federal government. But I don’t want to speak at length about this as I only got the statement issued by the Kelantan speaker this morning.

“I’ve contacted my lawyer to discuss the matter tomorrow. I intend to apply for a court order relating to an injunction.”

Azizi, who is also Gua Musang MP, was in hot soup with his former party after declaring his support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This morning, Kelantan speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah declared that the Nenggiri seat is vacant effective today.

At a press conference in Kota Bharu, he said the decision was made after the state legislative assembly was notified of Azizi’s termination from Bersatu.

He added that the seat needs to be filled in 60 days after the Election Commission acknowledges the vacancy notice.

On June 12, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he would send a notice to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, the Selangor speaker and Kelantan speaker regarding the positions of the seven elected representatives.

Previously, six Bersatu MPs and one state assemblyman had their party memberships revoked after failing to respond to a written instruction from the party’s supreme leadership council to pledge allegiance to the party.

The six MPs are Azizi, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi (Tanjong Karang). The assemblyman is Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari (Selat Klang). – June 19, 2024
