JURU — A hardware factory in Jalan IKS Juru went up in flames this afternoon, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky — visible even from Penang island.

In a preliminary statement, the Penang Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that the fire broke out at Jixing Hardware Sdn Bhd at around 3.18pm.

No casualties have been reported so far. As of Scoop’s arrival at the scene, firefighters were still battling to bring the blaze under control.

The department said roughly 60% of the building had been damaged.

Scoop’s observations revealed that the smoke had spread as far as the Bukit Minyak industrial zone and nearby residential areas such as Taman Kota Permai and Sungai Rambai — some 6km from the factory.

Authorities have said they will continue to provide updates on the situation. – July 15, 2025
