KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Safe Sport Code is taking firmer shape with clearer mechanisms now in place to protect athletes and create a safer sporting environment.
In the latest episode of Sport Check, former national bowler Datuk Shalin Zulkifli spoke in depth about how the initiative is helping athletes report abuse confidentially — including through an anonymous QR code system that allows victims to come forward without fear of reprisal.
Shalin, who heads the National Sports Council’s (NSC) MACE secretariat, said the programme also offers access to trauma counsellors and flexible response options — from simply raising awareness within teams to accompanying athletes when making police reports.
Beyond victim support, the Safe Sport framework now includes mandatory training for all national athletes and coaches, with certification tied directly to contract renewals.
This is part of a broader effort by the Youth and Sports Ministry to build a national registry of vetted, accredited coaches.
Since the Safe Sport Code was introduced by Minister Hannah Yeoh in 2023, officials say more misconduct cases have come to light — a sign that more individuals now feel safe enough to speak up.
