KUALA LUMPUR – Former Hang Tuah Jaya MP Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin is scheduled to provide his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) tomorrow, as part of an investigation into bribery allegations involving businessman Albert Tei.
MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that Shamsul, the former senior political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, had been summoned for questioning. Azam shared the update with Harian Metro this afternoon.
“So far, we have called three witnesses. The first, a woman named Sofia, appeared at the MACC office today at 2pm,” Azam was quoted as saying by the Malay newspaper. Sofia is reportedly featured in a controversial video linked to the case.
“Next, Shamsul will attend tomorrow as he is currently in Kota Kinabalu and needs to catch a flight back to Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
Azam also revealed that Tei, who has requested a delay, will be summoned on December 1 due to unavoidable technical issues.
“I have instructed officers to complete the investigation within two weeks,” he said. “This case is serious, and we aim to resolve it swiftly.”
Shamsul Iskandar resigned from his position as senior political secretary on November 25 following a controversy over a letter of support for contractors involved in a hospital project. The resignation followed calls from government supporters, including former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, for Anwar to take stronger action in combating corruption.
While Anwar accepted the resignation, he stated that although he disagreed with Shamsul’s actions, the situation did not warrant dismissal. The Prime Minister clarified that the letter of support did not lead to the approval of the project.
MACC’s investigation was prompted by a report by a media portal that raised allegations of bribery involving Tei and Shamsul.
Azam reiterated that all individuals involved must cooperate fully with the investigation. – November 27, 2025
