MCMC investigates woman over fake TikTok shutdown post

Regulator questions suspect linked to fabricated claim using Buletin TV3 logo to falsely announce TikTok ban

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a woman in connection with a social media post that falsely claimed Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil had announced the shutdown of TikTok in Malaysia.

The post, which featured the Buletin TV3 logo and visuals, was found to be a doctored fabrication.

In a statement today, MCMC confirmed that the minister had never made any such announcement, and the content had been deliberately altered. The Commission also revealed that Media Prima Berhad, which operates Buletin TV3, has filed a police report, distancing itself from the post and its dissemination across any of its news platforms.

MCMC further said that it had questioned the woman responsible for the post at the Kerian police station in Perak. Authorities also seized her mobile phone and SIM card as part of the investigation.

The Commission emphasised that the unauthorised use of Buletin TV3’s logo and branding was a deliberate attempt to mislead the public. MCMC has initiated an investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which covers the misuse of online content and identities.

MCMC also reminded the public to verify information before posting, sharing, or commenting on social media, warning that spreading false content can lead to legal consequences. – December 30, 2025
