MCMC moves to curb re-sharing of old Quran desecration video

Commission warns viral reposts could threaten national harmony and security

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is taking action against the re-sharing of a viral video depicting a Singaporean citizen desecrating the Quran, warning that spreading the clip could undermine national security and social harmony.

In a statement today, the commission said it launched the move after receiving reports that the footage was circulating again on social media. Preliminary investigations found that the incident took place in 2024.

Although the act occurred in Singapore, MCMC said the recent re-uploading of the video has triggered unease among the Malaysian public.

“MCMC is working closely with social media platforms, specifically Threads, Facebook and TikTok, to curb the circulation of this video,” the commission said.

“Sharing content that touches on religious sensitivities is irresponsible and may constitute an offence under existing laws. The public is advised to immediately cease uploading, sharing or re-disseminating the video,” it added.

The regulator also urged members of the public to channel any relevant information through its complaints portal or to lodge reports with the Royal Malaysia Police to enable further action. — March 2, 2026
