KUALA LUMPUR — Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah has confirmed the incident involving a rollercoaster at Sunway Lagoon on the night of August 22.
He spoke to the New Straits Times, saying the incident may have been the result of “metal fatigue”.
“In my view, the incident may be attributable to metal fatigue,” NST quoted Cheah as saying.
“It’s an incident that all of us regret very much. We are lucky that there were no fatalities,” he added.
Cheah also revealed that the ride had been temporarily closed for inspection and maintenance “about two to three weeks before the incident”, according to NST’s report.
He confirmed that authorities are currently investigating the incident, and that police have ruled out foul play.
Police yesterday confirmed the incident at 9pm on Saturday night in which 10 people sustained minor injuries and were treated at hospitals in Subang Jaya.
Police, however, did not name the theme park, adding to the frustration of social media users who questioned why the media appeared to be concealing the operator’s identity.
22 people, including foreign tourists, had been riding the rollercoaster when the mishap happened.
The incident came to light after a video circulated on social media showing a woman being carried on a stretcher in a theme park environment.
Another video that has gone viral shows police personnel existing the entrance of Sunway Lagoon.
Earlier today, Subang Umno chief Datuk Dr Armand Azha Abu Hanifah urged the theme park operator to be transparent about the incident after three days of silence, stressing that there was no agenda to tarnish any company’s reputation, but that public concerns should be addressed. – August 25, 2026
