KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s largest water concessionaire, Air Selangor, will be announcing its revised domestic tariff tomorrow following an announcement of a hike effective February 1.
The National Water Services Commission said in a statement that domestic tariffs will see an average 22 sen hike per cubic metre for consumers in Peninsular Malaysia and the federal territory of Labuan.
Air Selangor supplies water to more than nine million consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
The concessionaire in July last year had hoped for the federal government to review and raise domestic water tariffs, which were last reviewed 17 years ago.
Air Selangor also cited increases in operational costs and capital expenditures, especially those related to its infrastructure.
In 2022, the concessionaire recorded revenue of RM2.45 billion, an increase of 12.38% from RM2.18 billion recorded in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the Selangor government had launched the Skim Air Darul Ehsan, aimed at providing 20 cubic metres of free water monthly to households earning RM5,000 and below in the state.
As for domestic bulk users at low-cost flats, they will continue to automatically receive 20 cubic metres of free water monthly until December 31, 2024. – January 17, 2024
