KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) has partnered with Alpha International Training & Consultancy to tackle the growing concern of sleep deprivation among commercial drivers, in a joint initiative to improve road safety across Malaysia.
The collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed at the Modern Vehicle Expert Consortium Symposium, held alongside Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2025.
The first initiative under the agreement is the Certified Sleep Recovery & Management Programme, which focuses on the often-overlooked impact of fatigue on road safety.
The programme aims to promote behavioural change among commercial drivers and transport operators by equipping them with practical tools to manage sleep and recovery more effectively.
In a statement, Alpha International said the strategic partnership supports the Transport Ministry’s recent call to enhance road safety and reduce accident rates through innovative, forward-looking measures.
Miros director-general Associate Professor Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to capacity building and sustainable road safety solutions.
“We believe this partnership will bring tangible improvements in road safety practices at both national and regional levels,” she said.
The MoA was signed by Siti Zaharah and Alpha International CEO Professor Dr Louis Adaikalam, who also serves as president of the Sleep Apnea Association of Malaysia. The signing was witnessed by Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.
Louis described the partnership as a crucial step towards addressing fatigue-related risks on Malaysian roads.
“Together, we aim to deliver impactful training solutions that align with evolving industry needs and contribute to Malaysia’s long-term road safety objectives,” he said.
The sleep recovery programme is expected to roll out in the coming months, with further initiatives to follow under the new partnership. — May 17, 2025
