Bangsar pool upgrade begins after 4 years, 42-44 weeks to finish: Fahmi

Lembah Pantai MP says matter discussed with DBKL, and issue has been expedited

KUALA LUMPUR – Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil has confirmed that upgrading work on the swimming pool at the Bangsar Sports Complex has commenced, after four years of abandonment.

Speaking to Scoop, Fahmi said that based on information received from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the work is expected to take between 42 and 44 weeks to complete.

“Recently, I had a discussion with residents living near the sports complex and heard their concerns regarding the condition of the swimming pool.

“I have already discussed the matter with DBKL and have instructed them to treat it with urgency.

“The issue has been expedited, and contractors have informed me that the pool will take approximately 42 to 44 weeks to complete.

“Once the upgrading work is done, residents can once again enjoy the facility as they did four years ago,” said Fahmi, who is also the communications minister.

Scoop reported on the swimming pool issue in December last year after residents complained that stagnant water in the abandoned pool had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising health concerns amid a rise in dengue cases.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, upon learning of the situation, pledged immediate action and dispatched officers to assess the condition of the facility.

Residents also hope the renovation will restore the pool to its former role as a communal space for recreational activities.

Built by DBKL in 1978, the Bangsar Sports Complex features an artificial turf futsal court, four tennis courts, four badminton courts – now also used for pickleball – a gymnasium, and a 25m swimming pool.

The complex is known for offering some of the most affordable gym rates in Kuala Lumpur, with daytime entry priced at RM2 and evening access at RM5 – providing residents with access to a decent range of weights and cardio equipment.

Meanwhile, Fahmi also told Scoop that a recent town hall session was held in Bangsar with the residents’ councils, where several local issues were discussed.

Elaborating on the matter, Bangsar Baru Residents’ Association president Datuk George Joseph told Scoop that one of the issues raised was illegal parking at PPR Sri Pahang.

“Yes, we had a town hall meeting and discussed matters affecting the Bangsar community. The parking situation at PPR Sri Pahang has spiralled out of control and is causing traffic problems. We are currently working with the authorities to find a solution.

“In addition to the swimming pool issue at the Bangsar Sports Complex, we also raised concerns about the poor condition of the playground within the complex, which needs to be repaired and made safe for our children.

“I’m happy that things are progressing well, and we are confident of seeing further improvements in the coming months,” he said when contacted. – May 22, 2025
