KUALA LUMPUR — The Cabinet is set to address reports regarding fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho’s alleged application for a pardon from United States authorities at its meeting next week.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the issue arose during today’s Cabinet session but was not formally discussed, Bernama reported.
“… however, it will certainly be brought to the attention of the Cabinet next week,” he told a weekly press conference at Angkasapuri.
Fahmi, who also serves as the Madani Government spokesperson, was responding to questions about reports that Low, widely known as Jho Low, had sought a pardon from US President Donald Trump, and whether the Malaysian government intended to formally oppose such a move.
When asked if Malaysia had received any official notification from the US authorities regarding the alleged pardon request, Fahmi said the topic was not covered in today’s Cabinet meeting.
“I would like to ask members of the media to refer the matter either to the Home Minister or the Foreign Minister,” he added.
International media have reported that Jho Low, accused by the US of orchestrating one of the largest financial frauds in history, submitted a pardon application to the US Justice Department earlier this year.
Low, charged in 2018 but remaining at large, is alleged to have engineered a scheme that misappropriated at least US$4.5 billion from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
According to the US Department of Justice website, the pardon request is filed under “Taek Jho Low” as a “Pardon after Completion of Sentence” and is currently listed as “pending.” – May 13, 2026
