KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak is recovering well after undergoing a coronary angiogram on Saturday, with doctors determining that no further procedures, including balloon angioplasty or stent placement, are required.
In a statement issued on Najib’s behalf by his solicitors Tetuan Shafee & Co., the legal firm said medical evaluations conducted over the past several weeks had identified a blockage in one of his coronary arteries, leading doctors to recommend a coronary angiogram for a more detailed assessment.
The statement said doctors had initially estimated a high likelihood that Najib would require additional treatment following the procedure.
“Based on the findings, the medical team advised that there was an estimated 95% probability that Dato’ Sri Najib would require further intervention in the form of balloon angioplasty and/or stent placement,” the statement said.
However, following the angiogram and a comprehensive review by specialists on Saturday, the medical team concluded that neither intervention was necessary.
“Following the coronary angiogram and comprehensive assessment conducted today, the treating specialists found that neither balloon angioplasty nor stent placement was required. Instead, the blockage can be effectively managed with medication, ongoing medical monitoring and follow-up treatment,” the statement said.
Tetuan Shafee & Co. said the decision to proceed with the coronary angiogram was made solely based on medical considerations and the clinical findings available at the time.
The firm added that concerns over the possibility of further intervention were “real and well-founded”, given the initial assessment indicating a strong possibility that additional treatment would be needed.
“Fortunately, the coronary angiogram showed that the blockage could be managed without the need for balloon angioplasty or stent placement,” the statement said.
The legal team said Najib remains in stable condition and will continue his recovery under the supervision of his doctors.
“Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah SWT, Dato’ Sri Najib is now in good condition and will continue his recovery under the close supervision of his treating doctors,” the statement added.
