KUALA LUMPUR – Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has flown to China to represent Malaysia at the 12th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Transport Ministers’ Meeting, embarking on his final official mission before resigning from the Cabinet.
The two-day summit, which begins today, will see Loke spearhead critical bilateral talks and sign several high-stakes memoranda of understanding (MoU) between Putrajaya and Beijing across the land, rail, maritime, aviation, and logistics sectors.
Following the Beijing summit, Loke will head to Shanghai to join Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s delegation before returning home to settle his departure.
“After the official event in Beijing, the minister is scheduled to travel to Shanghai to join Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s delegation before returning to Malaysia to handle matters related to his resignation as transport minister,” the Ministry of Transport confirmed in a statement today.
“The transport ministry will continue ensuring that all of the ministry’s matters and responsibilities are handled and carried out professionally,” the statement added.
Loke, who serves as DAP Secretary-General, sent shockwaves through the political landscape on Saturday when he announced his decision to step down as minister in the wake of the conditional pardon granted to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He clarified that he would briefly remain in office to clear pending ministry deliverables before officially handing over the portfolio.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed he will meet Loke to discuss the resignation immediately after their joint trip to Shanghai. – September 21, 2026
