KUALA LUMPUR – A man who allegedly claimed to be the president of the Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organisation Malaysia (Merhrom) has been charged with two offences linked to the management of an unregistered organisation.
The Registrar of Societies (RoS), in a statement, said Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani pleaded not guilty at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court today to charges under Sections 42 and 48 of the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832), Bernama reported.
The court fixed Oct 30 for mention of the case.
RoS said the charges were brought following an investigation by its Enforcement Division into MERHROM’s activities on social media, including statements and publications made by the accused, who had introduced himself as the organisation’s president.
“Checks found that MERHROM is not registered with RoS, while the accused is not an office-bearer of any registered organisation using the said name,” the statement said.
The department said it took a serious view of activities involving the management, operation or promotion of organisations that do not comply with legal requirements.
RoS added that monitoring and enforcement action would continue to ensure compliance with the Societies Act 1966 and related regulations. – September 30, 2026
