KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s squash standout, S. Sivasangari, received high praise from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after her remarkable performance at the 2026 Australian Open (Squash), where she claimed the championship in Brisbane yesterday.
In a Facebook post, the Prime Minister described her triumph as a proud moment for Malaysian sport and a clear demonstration of the dedication, discipline, and fighting spirit of the nation’s athletes.
“Congratulations to our national squash player, Sivasangari, for her outstanding victory at the 2026 Australian Open.
“Her achievement not only elevates Malaysia’s standing in the sporting world but also serves as an inspiration to young Malaysians to strive for even greater success,” he wrote.
Seeded top in the tournament, Sivasangari defeated United States player Marina Stefanoni in straight sets, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8, sealing the win in just 28 minutes.
The triumph marks Sivasangari’s 16th PSA Tour title and her second Gold-level victory, following her win at the Cincinnati Gaynor Cup in February last year, ending a 13-month title drought.
Speaking after the win, the 27-year-old, who trains in Prague under former world champion Grégory Gaultier, reflected on the pressure of being the top seed.
“I came in as the number one seed, which rarely happens in a Gold event. There was a bit more pressure on me compared to the other players,” she said.
“I just tried to stay composed and focus on my squash. I really enjoyed the tournament, and I’m thrilled to have won.
“It was a long match in the semifinal, which helped me get used to the court in the final.
“I knew I needed a quick start today, and it worked. I’m delighted to add another Gold-level title to my record and hope to continue this form to climb the world rankings.”
Sivasangari completed the tournament without dropping a single game.
Earlier this year, the Kedahan reached the Karachi Open (Squash) final, where she lost to world No. 3 Amina Orfi of Egypt. – March 16, 2026
