We didn’t start the fire: unity govt doesn’t care about candidates’ academic qualifications, says Loke

KUALA KUBU BAHARU – The unity government isn’t bothered about the academic qualifications of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election candidates, stressed DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

He clarified that netizens were the ones who raised concerns about the educational background of Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Khairul Azhari Saut.

The government, Loke said, is only focused on “promoting” its candidate for by-election.

“We have never questioned their (PN’s) academic qualifications; they were raised by netizens. It was not us who started this.

“They (PN) wanted to divert attention, they questioned our candidate’s qualifications. Then, we answered. What we did was just state the facts.

“We did not engage in any kind of character assassination, we have never said that their academic qualities were invalid. The matter was raised on social media,” he told reporters, here today.

Loke said if candidates had proper qualifications, they should have no qualms about “stating the facts,” as done by the unity government’s candidate, Pang Sock Tao.

“They (PN) did not need to divert attention; just answer and show the facts,” he added.

Recently, Pang revealed her UPSR and SPM results on social media after PAS Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari questioned her credentials.

Pang’s academic certificates revealed her as an alumna of SJK (C) On Pong in Ampang Hulu Langat, Selangor, and SM Chung Hua in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.

Afterward, Fadhli incensed voters by insinuating that Pang was a product of vernacular schools. In response, Pang said her dedication was to serving the local community.

However, DAP national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching in turn accused PAS of not being supportive of vernacular education and said that other PAS representatives send their children to Chinese schools. – May 1, 2024
