KUALA LUMPUR — Kuala Lumpur City FC (KL City) face the prospect of another RM50,000 fine and a second consecutive 3-0 defeat by default if they fail to field a team against Kuching City in their Super League clash tomorrow night.
The Malaysia Football League (MFL) has rejected KL City’s request to postpone the match, which is scheduled to take place at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras.
The decision was made by the MFL board of directors during a special meeting yesterday, with the match ordered to proceed as scheduled.
“Should KL City fail to take part in the match, Kuching City FC will be awarded a 3-0 victory and three points, while the home side will also face a RM50,000 fine.
“MFL stresses that every club participating in the Malaysia League is responsible for fully complying with the competition regulations and all official directives issued by MFL to ensure the smooth running and integrity of the competition are preserved,” MFL said in a statement today.
KL City were already hit with a RM50,000 fine and ordered to bear all compensation and related costs determined by MFL after their Super League match against Negeri Sembilan FC at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Paroi last Saturday was called off at the eleventh hour.
The MFL board of directors subsequently awarded Negeri Sembilan a 3-0 victory and three points after KL City failed to take the field in what was their opening match of the Super League season.
MFL said the decision was reached after finding that KL City had failed to complete their player registration process early enough, leaving the club unable to assemble a full squad for the match.
A check through the MyPAS system on Saturday found that KL City had registered only 12 players—11 outfield players and one goalkeeper.
The latest development comes amid a growing player shortage at the club, which has also been hit by an influenza outbreak.
Speaking to Scoop yesterday, KL City chairman Syed Yazid Syed Omar said there was a strong possibility that the City Boys’ next two matches, against Kuching City and Brunei DPMM, could not go ahead due to a lack of available players.
He said five players and a team official had tested positive for influenza, while several others were also showing symptoms.
Players who test positive are required to undergo quarantine and rest for at least a week, further compounding KL City’s mounting selection crisis.
With MFL standing firm on its decision, KL City must now find a way to field a team tomorrow night or risk another costly punishment—and a second successive defeat without kicking a ball. – August 25, 2026
