[UPDATED] Mohd Shukri steps down as Perlis Menteri Besar, citing health concerns

The PAS leader bemoans 'betrayal' from his former party colleagues he deemed as friends

KUALA LUMPUR – Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli has resigned from his post with immediate effect, citing health reasons as the state grapples with an unfolding political crisis.

The Sanglang assemblyman said he voluntarily submitted his resignation letter to the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, after being granted an audience at the Royal Ward of Tuanku Fauziah Hospital earlier today.

“I have conveyed my intention to His Royal Highness through a voluntary resignation letter effective today. This decision is due to my health condition, which has not been favourable recently,” Berita Harian quoted him telling a press conference at the Menteri Besar’s official residence.

Mohd Shukri stressed that he is only relinquishing his role as Menteri Besar and will continue serving as Sanglang representative.

“I remain the assemblyman for Sanglang and will continue serving my constituents,” he said, while expressing gratitude to all parties who supported his administration.

Mohd Shukri also told the press conference that he was caught off guard by the move to oust him, which he dubbed an “act of betrayal.”

“I did not get any prior information on the move, and it just happened. I only learned about it on the day of the incident. It shows how cunningly they planned this,” he reportedly said.

He further expressed disappointment with his former party colleagues Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji), who pulled their support for him. They joined five other Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblymen in the state in the mutiny.

“I made a mistake by being too nice and appreciative of the friendship that I had (with them). I did not expect that this friendship would result in me being treated this way,” he reportedly added.

The trio was sacked from PAS yesterday following the move, and the State Assembly Speaker declared their seats vacant, triggering uncertainty over the state’s political stability.

Mohd Shukri was sworn in as Perlis’ 11th Menteri Besar on 22 November 2022 and became the first Perikatan Nasional leader to helm the state after six decades of Barisan Nasional rule. – December 25, 2025
